If like us you tend to lower your meat-eating during the summer, or have decided to go on the vegetarian slope then you’ll know that convincing the family is not always easy! “What is this white square thing?” “Tofu.. AGAIN?”
We have tried so many things including some little white lies “yes it’s chicken.. very square chicken..” but nobody was a fool.
So instead of hiding it, show the family it can be very good. The key to actually LIKE tofu (because let’s be honest it has no taste) is to treat it like any other meat or fish.
Our top 3 is
1. Marinated tofu in lemon and ginger
The good thing about this recipe is that you can prepare it before, leave it in the fridge and just cook it before dinner!
Just cut the tofu into squares and put it in a bowl with half a lemon juice, garlic, olive oil (enough so that the tofu is actually soaked in the juice), salt and pepper and then any herbs you like. Let it marinate for at least an hour.
Cook it in a frying pan so that it’s crispy on the outside and tender in the inside. You won’t need to add anything else in the pan. It goes very well with some rice!
2. Tofu curry
Haven’t you always wondered why we always put chicken in curries when yo can barely taste it with all the spices? Well why not trade chicken with tofu?
Cook your curry like you would, with the curry paste and all the spices nobody will even notice there is tofu there!
3. Stuffed vegetable with tofu
Cut any vegetable in half (courgette, potato, pepper) and empty it. Don’t throw it away (except for the pepper!) and mix it with some tofu, herbs (you can add bread and milk to make it more consistent), stuff it back in the vegetable and add cheese on top and put it in the oven for around 15 minutes at 190°C
This is just a sample but to really enjoy tofu just treat it like any other food, put herbs, lemons, garlic, everything to give it taste! Have fun and experiment, there is little chance you can go wrong as tofu doesn’t have a lot of taste!
We have also discovered recently Quorn meat, it literally tastes like meat and is an amazing substitute for meat eaters in the family! It’s even easier to cook it as it looks like meat!
